In June 2024, I was struggling to choose from fabulous
destinations across Europe. I was undecided between a few places, but when
I found out through advertisements that you could book a mystery holiday, my
curiosity peaked, and I knew immediately that’s what I would do. After booking,
I had a nervous wait for a few hours before my city break was revealed. As I
saw Porto on the screen my nervousness disappeared. I was pleasantly surprised
and excited as this was not a place where I would usually choose to visit. This blog will be a guide on how to spend 72 hours in Porto.
As soon as I arrived, I was met with warm sunshine and a
very laid-back atmosphere which I was surprised at considering that it is Portugal’s
second-largest city. It was full of colourful buildings, beautiful views and delicious
food which was perfect for what I wanted. Although I did not expect a lot from
the hotel, I was taken aback by how amazing our hotel was considering the
price. The only drawback was that it was a 7-minute taxi ride into the centre,
however, this was not a problem due to the affordability of transport.
Visiting Dom Luís I Bridge and taking a wine tour down the Douro River to try some of Porto’s famous port wines were wonderful. However, I believe that the highlight of the trip was definitely on the second last day. It was the day of Portugal vs The Czech Republic in the Euros group stage. I watched from the official fan zone in Porto surrounded by Portuguese fans overlooking the Douro River. The atmosphere was great throughout the full game, however, the atmosphere really erupted when Portugal won the game in the very last minute.
I would definitely recommend Porto to other city break
travellers and would rank it 5th place on my list of cities I have
travelled to.
