Amsterdam Uncovered: The Ultimate Guide to Exploring the City of Canals

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands where cobblestone streets meet beautiful canals and the bicycles outnumber the cars. It is one of the most travelled to cities in not only Europe, but the world and has so much to offer. This blog will outline the best tips to ensure that your visit to Amsterdam is the best it could be.

Starting the trip off just a 10-minute walk from the main train station, Amsterdam Centraal, in Dam Square. This is the heart of the city and the busiest place for tourists and locals. Here you will find amazing restaurants, bars, and shops surrounded by some famous landmarks. Make sure to stop by the National Monument which is in the centre of Dam Square.

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a canal tour. Hopping on an open-roof boat to explore Amsterdam's beautiful canal system gives a unique experience of the city and shows it in a different light.

Next, discover the museum district which is home to renowned museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum which are all located within walking distance of each other. The Anne Frank House is also a must-visit when you are exploring Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is also very infamous for its adult-themed entertainment. The red-light district is in the centre of Amsterdam and is worth a visit, especially throughout the day. It's home to quirky shops and museums such as the Cannabis Museum, which offers a look into the city's cannabis culture. Below are some essential tips that will guide you on your trip to Amsterdam.

1.      Rent a Bike – Amsterdam is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world.

2.      Wear comfortable shoes as the streets can be tricky.

3.      Buy tickets in advance – especially for the Anne Frank House.

4.       Buy the Amsterdam city card for the length of your visit for huge discounts.

5.      Visit in quiet times – Amsterdam can get very crowded during the Summer.

I would definitely recommend Amsterdam to other city break travellers and would rank it 1st place on my list of cities I have travelled to.
